In the second class, we learned about medicinal plants, biological roles and storage of essential oils within plants, and their extraction methods.
We did a fun activity when learning about essential oil storage within plants with Rosemary Sprig, Orange (or Lemon, Mandarin) and Ginger.
Rosemary - An example of plants storing essential oils in External Secretory Structures. One could smell the fresh aroma by sniffing the sprig directly or gently touching/rubbing the sprig and then smelling the aroma imparted onto the skin.
Orange - An example of plants storing essential oils in Internal Secretory Cavities. Squeezing the peel releases the volatile aromatic compounds into the air, smelling the fresh orange aroma.
Ginger - An example of plants storing essential oils in Internal Secretory Cells. Chopping it up helps to release the aromatic compounds, making the smell more pronounced.
It was also an opportunity to get to know the plants from which their essential oil is extracted and to connect with plants. And I felt how lovely it was to enjoy the aroma simply by engaging with the plant parts directly.
Product Application
We learned to make an Aromatic Lotion for the body.
